Key policy choices support more diverse housing options and land for employment

Key policy choices are in! In December 2016, the Reno City Council and Planning Commission provided direction on key policy choices related to growth to inform the new master plan.

Guided by public input, housing and employment market assessments, fiscal analysis of several growth scenarios and initial land-use approach documents, the two bodies considered key policy areas and gave the following direction:

    • Include more employment lands on the future land use map
    • More clearly identify employment lands citywide
  • Housing
    • Explore more diverse housing in central neighborhoods
    • Incorporate support for a broader mix of housing in new neighborhoods
    • Explore strategies to encourage diversity in existing planned unit developments (PUDs)
  • Infill/Redevelopment
    • Prioritize urban infill and redevelopment within the McCarran loop
    • Address needed capital investments
  • Neighborhood Amenities
    • Address distinctions between established and new neighborhoods in updated policies
  • Infrastructure
    • Explore strategies to support key policy directions.

Next Steps

With this key direction in hand, we are now turning our attention to the policies that will be at the heart of the master plan.

Draft components of the plan have been separated into three separate work streams to make review of the draft plan more manageable: policies that apply to particular areas within the City, policies that apply citywide, and an implementation plan. Over the next nine months, all three of these work streams will come together to form the final Reno Master Plan.
